Residence with a Zen Style Courtyard and Japanese Tea Room

House Mr, designed by Teruo Miyahara, is a unique residence that combines the principles of Zen style with modern architecture. The split-level floor plan maximizes the use of space in a small footprint, while the central Zen style patio provides natural light and a sense of privacy in a compacted city location.

The design concept, called "leaves," aims to create a socially and ecologically sustainable urban house model. The house is designed to upgrade all elements to a premium level, offering a volume efficient solution that anticipates the best quality of life. The leaves design concept is a small house footprint that contains large volumes and spaces full of architectural pleasures.

House Mr is made possible by a steel frame structure, which allows for the split-level floor plan. The central stairs connect each room, creating a seamless flow throughout the house. The kitchen, located in the center, provides a panoramic view of the entire house, from the entrance to the Japanese tea room around the center garden.

The design of House Mr allows for customization according to the owner's needs and lifestyle. For example, the wall lines between rooms on the upper floor can be changed to accommodate different family members. This flexibility reflects the ever-changing nature of our lives, and architects should provide the best lifestyle solutions to homeowners.

House Mr, located in Tokyo, Japan, was designed by Teruo Miyahara, Naoko Taniguchi, and Fumitaka Takagi. The project took place from January 2012 to October 2012, with construction lasting from October 2012 to May 2013.

This innovative design has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building, and Structure Design in 2019. The award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
